Natural Gas Safety
If you smell
rotten eggs,
it could be a leak
Know the smell
Natural gas is odorless and tasteless. To make sure you know when there’s a gas leak, we add a harmless gas called mercaptan to give it a rotten-egg smell.
Know what to do
Although natural gas isn’t toxic, it is highly flammable. If you suspect a leak:
- Evacuate your home immediately.
- Don’t use electrical switches, phones, garage door openers, motors, matches or lighters and don’t smoke.
- Once outside, call Union Gas at 1-877-969-0999 or 911 from a safe distance.

Know your alarms
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms won’t detect a natural gas leak. Only a natural gas alarm or combined natural gas/CO alarm will be set off if there’s a leak.
