With the start of a new year just around the corner, it’s a time when people like to reflect on all the projects and renovations they’d like to undertake in their home. Winter is upon us, which means it’s important to keep your outdoor natural gas meter and exhaust vents free of snow and ice. This helps to ensure that the meter will work safely and that heating equipment doesn’t go into safety shutdown. It also allows easy access for accurate meter readings or emergency situations.

To keep your meter clear, just gently brush off snow or ice with a soft broom or brush—never use a sharp tool like an ice scraper—and be careful not to bump your meter with a snowblower.

As you bring out the holiday decorations, remember to keep boxes and other items away from your furnace, water heater and thermostat. Keep the space around them clear in case Union Gas or your heating contractor need to access them for service or repairs.
