Panhandle Pipeline Replacement
To address development and population growth along our Panhandle pipeline system in the Town of Lakeshore and to strengthen access to affordable and plentiful natural gas, Union Gas replaced about 14 kilometres of an existing transmission pipeline, a project that began in the summer of 2014 and was completed in two phases.
Phase 1 of the Panhandle Pipeline Replacement project, which is in service, was approved by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) on Jan. 13, 2014. (To view the documents we filed, visit our Regulatory page and click on the Panhandle project.)
Phase 2 of the project included the replacement of the remaining 5.5 kilometres of existing natural gas transmission pipeline, and construction was completed at the end of 2016. Clean-up work on Phase 2 will continue through the summer of 2017.
- Ensure continued safe delivery of natural gas
- Improve access to plentiful, affordable gas
- Project has 2 phases
- Safety a top priority during construction
- Community engagement a priority
Both phases will see 16-inch diameter pipe replaced with 20-inch diameter pipe designed and constructed to meet current and future pipe strength requirements.
Union Gas values and seeks input from residents, municipalities, landowners and government agencies. We also have a long-standing practice of meaningful engagement with First Nations and the Métis Nation communities.
An open house for Phase 1 was held on Sept. 26, 2013. A Phase 2 information session was held on July 23, 2014, to give interested individuals an opportunity to provide comments regarding the proposed pipeline, construction, procedures and mitigation efforts.
The top priority at Union Gas is safety and the pipeline will be constructed in compliance with all provincial safety requirements for pipeline construction.
Union Gas has been delivering natural gas in Ontario for over 100 years. This history has provided us with significant experience in pipeline construction and operation and we have an enviable safety and reliability record.
We are also committed to minimizing the effects of its projects and operations of the environment.
