"At Union Gas, we're dedicated to the environment and to conservation programs," said Ed Gouweloos, utility service manager Orillia, Union Gas. "That's why we choose to invest in environmental education programs, such as 'Lessons-in-a-Backpack' provided by Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve."
The Lessons-in-a-Backpack are teaching resources and activities that are designed for teachers in the Parry Sound area, along eastern Georgian Bay from Honey Habour to the French River. Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve staff have created over 30 lessons based on the Ontario curriculum for grades 2-10 that create opportunities for outdoor learning. The topics range from endangered species and their habitats, to geology and wetlands, as well as energy and water conservation. They are available for download from www.gbbr.ca.
"This generous grant from Union Gas will directly support environmental education in eastern Georgian Bay, and will help us to reach over 1,000 students this year," said Dr. Rebecca Pollock, executive director of the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve. "We want to deliver engaging, hands-on outdoor education so that a whole generation of youth become stewards of this environment. With support from partners, we can connect more students to this unique region, designated by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve."
