Union Gas Supports Calvin Township Volunteer Fire Department With $2,500 Grant For Purchase of Safety Equipment

Mattawa, ON, November 16, 2017 - Union Gas supports the Municipality of Calvin with a $2,500 grant to Calvin Township Volunteer Fire Department for the purchase of bunker gear to help ensure the safety of volunteer firefighters.

"At Union Gas, safety governs everything we do, whether we are building a pipeline or installing a gas meter at your home," said Chris Ridler, utility services manager North Bay, Union Gas. "Because of our safety culture, we make it a priority to support our local volunteer firefighters, helping to ensure their safety as they serve the community."

Calvin Township Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1976 and has a complement of 17 firefighters. The station, located in Mattawa, houses a pumper, two pumper tankers and a rescue truck. The response area is approximately 100 square kilometers and includes Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, Canadian Ecology Centre, Columbia Forest Products and the residents of the unincorporated Township of Lauder.

"Safety for the firefighters and the people we serve is paramount. Donations, contributions and grants such as the one we received from Union Gas are vital to the department and help us to keep our volunteer firefighters protected with the right safety equipment," said Dean Maxwell, fire chief, Calvin Township Volunteer Fire Department. "This grant along with the free training provided by Union Gas is a boost for small departments like ours and will benefit the people we serve."
