Union Gas Helps YMCA Children's Safety Village Teach Children About Safety Courtesy of a $3,000 Grant

London, ON, May 16, 2017 - Union Gas is helping the YMCA Children's Safety Village reduce childhood injuries by teaching children from Kindergarten to grade four about personal responsibility and awareness regarding safety, through a $3,000 grant awarded today.

"At Union Gas, we put safety above all else, both on the job and off the job," said Kris Dixon, utility services manager, Union Gas.  "That's why we are pleased to support important safety educational programs like the hands-on safety lessons provided by the Safety Village."

The YMCA Children's Safety Village is a child-sized village located in the Thames Valley District, within the Fanshawe Conservation Area. The Children's Safety Village helps reduce injuries by providing hands-on safety lessons to more than 5,000 children from kindergarten to grade four each year.  Students learn about taking individual responsibility and being safety aware while travelling in cars, riding bikes, walking down the street, being in the kitchen and encountering a fire in the home. The lessons are taught by educators from the local police and fire department and link directly to the Healthy Living Strand under Personal Safety and Injury Prevention Expectations.

"The YMCA Children's Safety Village is delighted to partner with Union Gas again this year to deliver hands-on safety education to our local children. In 2016, 5,500 children learned critical safety skills here at the Safety Village, a noteworthy achievement. With dedicated community partners like Union Gas, we are able to ensure that our local children are taking home safety lessons that are meaningful and make an impact in their lives," said Chris Wick, regional manager of camps, YMCA Children's Safety Village. "Thank you, Union Gas, for your ongoing support in helping the YMCA strengthen our community!"
