"At Union Gas, we share a commitment to the community and we work hard to be good partners in the more than 400 we serve across the province," said Dave Gardener, utility services manager, Union Gas. "That's why we support the Henderson Secondary School Nutrition Program, investing in the well being of our youth."
The Henderson Nutrition Program serves approximately 300 students, five days a week. Students are served three of the four food groups every day through the assistance of fellow students, educational assistants and teachers. There is a real sense of community that has developed every morning as the Henderson students "break bread together". Numerous studies support the idea that when students nutritional needs are met, their attendance and academic success both improve. It is difficult to remain focused and learn when students are hungry and ultimately academic success leads to a stronger community.
"The generous donations Union Gas has made to Henderson's Nutrition Program over the years has allowed our program to experience much needed stability," states Sandra Holmes, Nutrition Committee Coordinator. "Our mid-morning meal has become integral in meeting the nutritional needs of many of our students. With Henderson's expanding ESL program, we have welcomed many new immigrants into our school community and this has increased our daily needs. When students are hungry their academic success is affected in a negative way. Full stomachs lead to more focused learning."
