Apartment fire deaths are a growing trend in Ontario and although no two fires are alike, it appears during these fires residents are fleeing their units and venturing into smoke filled hallways, evacuating onto the roof or becoming trapped in stairwells. Often vulnerable populations reside in apartments and non-ambulatory occupants are at greater risk of becoming injured or worse, as their ability to safely escape from a fire can be more limited.  My Part – Apartment Fire & Emergency Planning, is an educational program aimed at increasing knowledge of fire safety, evacuation and shelter-in-place procedures for Chatham & Wallaceburg residents living in apartment buildings.

"This generous donation from Union Gas helps to strengthen our collaborative partnership. Training and awareness, related to the safe handling of natural gas, is important for the fire department and for Union Gas," said Chris Case, assistant fire chief, Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services. "Working together we are better equipped to keep our community informed and safe."
