The 2016 Fire Prevention Week (October 9th to 15th) campaign, "Don't wait check the date, smoke alarms expire every 10 years," provides an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of checking smoke alarms to make sure that they haven't expired. Residences are required to have a working smoke alarm outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. It is also highly recommended to have working smoke alarms in every bedroom. The Union Gas grant will enable the department to provide public education materials specifically around this important Fire Prevention Week message. Fire Prevention Week is a platform when citizens are tuned into fire safety. During Fire Prevention Week there are key life safety media messages delivered from Sarnia Fire Rescue Services and the Office of the Fire Marshal Emergency Management (OFMEM). Sarnia Fire Rescue Services will continue communicating and meeting with community groups throughout the year.
"We welcome the participation and support from Union Gas," said John Kingyens, fire chief, Sarnia Fire Rescue Services. "Working together on our mission to reduce the loss of life and lessen the risk within the community through public education."
