Presentation of Cheque to rare Charitable Research Reserve

Stephanie Sobek-Swant, executive director, rare accepts cheque from Murray Costello, district manager, Waterloo/Brantford, Union Gas, along with rare staff and Union Gas volunteers.

"At Union Gas, we care about the environment," said Murray Costello, district manager, Waterloo/Brantford, Union Gas. "We're proud to continue our support of the important environmental conservation work being done by rare in this community."

With 24 different habitat types, including old growth forests and cliffs and alvars, and 8km of hiking trails, free and open to the public, rare is an urban land trust and environmental institute in the heart of Waterloo Region.  The reserve's goal is to preserve and restore the ecological functioning and integrity of important ecosystems. A major part of land stewardship at rare is the management of invasive species. Invasive species are plants not native to a specific area, existing without the predators and diseases that might help control them.

Union Gas' 2016 grant to rare will help support ongoing studies and experiments on how to best deal with unwanted invaders without the use of herbicides, as well as assist with planting more native trees, shrubs and plants on the property where invasive species have been removed.

"This support is extremely important to us since our research work can inform important policy and management decisions in Ontario and beyond, where many communities struggle with invasive species and restoration issues," said Stephanie Sobek-Swant, executive director, rare in response to the gift. "We're delighted and thankful that Union Gas has been such an outstanding supporter. Conservation work benefits us all, and Union Gas has been a real leader in helping us finding science-based best practices that we can also use as part of our environmental education programs for students from JK to Grade 12."
