Communicating your goals
Defining and communicating your goal will provide the team with a common purpose as well as provide the key message, reason for your efforts - what is is you want to do and why others should participate. Setting an actionable goal will inspire participation and create a positive, "can do" outlook. The information below will help your team develop your goal and make sure it is achievable.
What is a goal. A goal is to create something, finish it within a specific timeframe within an agreed upon schedule and complete it within a specific budget. Below is an outline of six criteria to use in creating and setting a goal.
Six criteria for setting a good goal
- Goals must be specific: your goals should be clear and easy to understand and specify what the project will look like/do when it is completed.
- Goals must be realistic: Your goals should be reasonably difficult to achieve yet still attainable. A difficult yet achievable goal is motivating while an impossible one is demoralizing.
- Goals must be timely: Projects must have a definite finish date or they will never get finished.
- Goals must be measurable: You must be able to, in some way, measure your success at meeting your goals.
- Goals need agreement: At project onset, the project manager, management, stakeholders and customers must agree on the goals before any further project planning occurs.
- Responsibility for achieving goals must be specified: People responsible for achieving goals must be identified and must be willing to accept responsibility.
Goals must be specific: your goals should be clear and easy to understand and specify what the project will look like/do when it is completed.
Refining your goals
To make sure your project’s goals are as to the point as possible you should do the following:
- Create a list of all of the project's goals.
- Study the list and eliminate anything that has no direct bearing on the project.
- Eliminate any of the goals that are only steps towards meeting the end goals and not end goals themselves.
- Determine whether all of the goals you’ve set are doable in one project.
- Cross out goals that really belong to a separate project or that do not pertain to the project at hand.
