On Jan. 1, 2017, the Ontario government’s cap-and-trade program came into effect.
The cost of cap and trade is about 3.3 cents per cubic metre of natural gas used, and these costs are approved by the Ontario Energy Board.
Because the cap-and-trade fee is charged per cubic metre of natural gas, your total cost per month is based on how much gas you use. This cost is now included within the Delivery line of your Union Gas bill. However, you can calculate how much the
program is costing you by using our simple calculator.
Save energy, save money
Union Gas incentive programs are designed to help you save money and energy. Visit our business section for more information about programs that pay you to reduce your natural gas use, lower your operating costs and lessen the impact of cap and trade on your business.

Protect yourself from carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that can build up when your furnace, water heater or other fuel-burning equipment doesn’t burn or vent properly. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it.
To prevent harm or even death, it’s important that you:
Have all fuel-burning equipment inspected at least once a year by a Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) registered heating contractor
Install a CO alarm on every level of your business
Keep outside exhaust vents, flues and chimneys clear of leaves, nests and other debris
Please be aware that a CO alarm will not detect a natural gas leak. For that, you’ll need a natural gas alarm or combination CO/natural gas alarm.
