Our Commitment to Community
Welcome to the Union Gas Community website.
Steve Baker, President
For over a century, we've been active members of Ontario's communities -- and today we live and work in more than 400 of them across the province. We strive every day to be your community’s Partner of Choice.
Union Gas - a Spectra Energy company - is committed to investing in the communities we serve through a comprehensive community relations program that includes donations for charitable organizations, sponsorships, in-kind contributions and volunteerism. We support everything from annual United Way campaigns to local conservation areas and food banks, from programs that teach children about safety to ones that bring them closer to nature. Simply put, we are investing in making life better.
Our best community ambassadors are our employees and retirees, many of whom you’ll know as active members of local chambers of commerce, service clubs and advisory panels. Every year, our employees and retirees invest their "sweat equity" to lead and complete hands-on projects for charitable and non-profit groups in their communities through a company-supported program called Helping Hands in Action. In 2015, our employees completed 334 HHIA projects, supporting everything from the Relay for Life to a breakfast program for schoolchildren. In fact, last year our employees and retirees volunteered approximately 19,000 hours to the communities where they live and work.
We also support our employees and retirees through employee-directed giving to eligible charitable organizations, by supporting HHIA projects with grant dollars to purchase materials, and by matching their personal contributions to our United Way campaign dollar for dollar.
I’m very proud of the giving spirit of our employees, past and present, and I’m equally proud to be leading a company that supports that spirit in so many ways. It’s just one example of how Union Gas strives to be an Employer of Choice.
Like every large company, we receive requests for support from many meaningful charitable and non-profit organizations. To make the largest impact possible in our communities, our decisions are guided by a focused giving program.
First, we direct our funding to communities that fall within our service area, which extends throughout northern Ontario from the Manitoba border to the North Bay/Muskoka area, through southwestern Ontario from Windsor to just west of Toronto (excluding the GTA), and across eastern Ontario from Port Hope to Cornwall.
Second, we direct funding toward charitable organizations and programs that focus on community vitality, as well as education and workforce development. We also look for ways to support First Nation and Métis communities, with the aim of building long-term, productive relationships based on mutual respect and economic opportunity.
At the core of our commitment to community is the Spectra Energy Foundation. Funded by Spectra Energy shareholders, this non-profit organization makes charitable grants to selected charitable organizations. Grant recipients must be recognized as a charitable organization registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). They must also fit into the above-mentioned focus areas.
I hope you will use the links on this page to learn more about the ways we are active in your community, the various programs we support across Ontario, and how to apply for support for your project or organization.
Working together, I know we can make life in our great communities even better.
