Innovative Storage and Transmission Services

In addition to providing safe and reliable distribution services to customers in its franchise area, Union Gas serves the surrounding storage and transmission marketplace.  The Dawn Hub is the largest underground storage facility in Canada and one of the largest in North America.  It offers customers such as power generators, distribution and pipeline companies and energy marketers an important link in the movement of natural gas from Western Canadian and U.S. supply basins to markets in central Canada, the Great Lakes region and the northeast U.S.  Customers include:

• large gas fired power generators who use Union’s storage and transmission services to meet their fluctuating hourly needs,
• other gas distribution companies like Enbridge (Toronto and Eastern Ontario) and Gaz Metro (Quebec) who utilize Union services to meet the seasonal needs of their millions of end users,
• other pipeline companies like TCPL who transport gas to and from storage to markets downstream for their customers,
• energy marketers who use storage and transmission to capitalize on hourly, daily and seasonal market opportunities

Storage Facilities at the Dawn Hub

• Canada's largest underground natural gas storage facilities in 22 depleted gas pools in south-western Ontario.
• Working capacity: over 166 PJs
• An integrated storage operation that provides unmatched reliability

System Throughput

• Approximately 1,300 Petajoules, or approximately 1.2 trillion cubic feet per year.  (Distribution volume - 540 PJs; Storage and Transmission activity - 760 PJs)
