Natural Gas Furnaces - Buying Tips

Natural Gas FurnacesIf the last time you shopped for a furnace was over a decade ago you’ll notice that furnace technologies have changed. Older furnaces were often oversized for the home they were heating. That means you may not want to replace your furnace to the same specifications.

The most important step you need to take in selecting a furnace is to call at least three Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) contractors to come to your home for measuring and furnace recommendations.

When the contractor is at your home they will:

  • Professionally measure your home to formulate your exact heat requirements.
  • Take into account the construction of your home, your climatic region, ductwork design, filter system and space limitations before recommending a size of furnace
  • Offer a variety of models in different price and efficiency ranges that meet your needs.
  • Give you the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE*) rating on each furnace they suggest to help you make an informed decision. This rating compares the percentage of heat delivered to your home compared to the heat lost up the chimney. High efficiency models will deliver between 90-97% of its heat to your home.
  • Leave a written estimate that includes details on equipment, efficiency and warranty for your closer inspection
  • Help you understand the EnerGuide label on the furnaces that are recommended
  • Determine if an Energy Star furnace is right for you

* AFUE ratings - The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating measures the amount of fuel converted to space heat in proportion to the amount of fuel entering the furnace. This is commonly expressed as a percentage. Energy Star labeled furnaces must meet or exceed 90% AFUE energy efficiency rating.

EnerGuide labels are on every natural gas furnace sold in Canada. EnerGuide is a labeling system that is regulated by our government. Find out more details about EnerGuide and how it can help you make wise energy choices.
