Makes 6 burgers

  • 3/4 pound skinless ground chicken or turkey
  • 3/4 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup unseasoned, dry bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup minced green onions
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 tsp grated ginger root
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 6 hamburger rolls
  • Lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and your favourite burger toppings (optional)

  1. In a large bowl, combine chicken, beef, bread crumbs, onions, and egg white. Mix well (using your hands works best).
  2. In a small bowl, combine ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger root, garlic and sesame oil.
  3. Add 3 tablespoons of this mixture to ground meat, and mix well. Reserve remaining sauce to brush on burgers while grilling.
  4. Shape meat mixture into 6 patties.
  5. Cook burgers on a medium-hot barbecue for about 5 minutes per side, or until desired “doneness” is reached.
  6. Baste with reserved sauce.
  7. Serve on hamburger rolls with your favourite toppings.
