Fall Furnace Check Up | Lower Winter Heating Bills

It's Fall Furnace Check Up Time Again!

Check the health of your furnace, fireplace and air conditioner

Great preventative maintenance starts with a seasonal check up for your natural gas furnace, fireplace and air conditioner. Like a visit from your doctor, a check up by a licensed Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) contractor can help ensure your family's safety and save you money in the long run.

What you should expect
With each check up, your HVAC contractor will inspect,
clean and service your natural gas furnace, fireplace
and air conditioner to determine if repairs or improvements
are needed to ensure they're operating safely. And any
resulting repairs are sure to improve energy efficiency
within your home and help you save on your
energy bills this season!

How to keep your heating and
cooling systems healthy

Before your next scheduled fall check up,
here are some things you can do to keep
your system healthy:

  • Clean or replace your furnace air filter
now and every month or two during
    the heating season
  • Vacuum dust from the warm air registers
    throughout your home
  • Check that your outdoor vent is clear
and free of garden material or animal nests
  • Ensure that the hot air and return air
registers in every room are clear of obstructions
  • Clean your outside air conditioning unit with a
    gentle spray of water

Predictable and Lower Winter Heating Bills with EBP

It's a fact. Canadian winters are cold and our heating bills – well, they can quickly heat up! That's why Union Gas created the Equal Billing Plan (EBP) to help you with your monthly heating expenses.
With the EBP, your billing will instantly become
more predictable and manageable throughout the
entire year.

Here's how it works
Quite simply, with the EBP, you spread your
annual heating costs evenly throughout the year.

Union Gas determines your total natural
gas use for the previous year and then
uses it to calculate your estimated annual
cost for the upcoming year using current
rates. That total amount is then divided
equally over 11 monthly instalments. In
the 12th month, Union Gas either credits
or debits your account for any difference
between the amount you've paid and
the gas actually used.

The plan begins in September and runs
through July each year, with August as
the 'true-up' month. If you enrol in the plan
between September and February, it begins
with your next bill. If you enrol between
March and August, the plan begins the
following September.
