ORILLIA AND AREA CHILDREN'S SAFETY VILLAGE AND UNION GAS CELEBRATE LAUNCH OF PORTABLE SAFETY VILLAGE
The First of its Kind in Canada
Orillia, ON – Representatives from Union Gas, the Orillia and Area Children's Safety Village and other community partners gathered today at Regent Park Public School to celebrate the national launch of the new portable children's safety village. Built with funds donated by the lead sponsor Union Gas and a number of additional community sponsors, the portable interactive learning center provides educators with an accessible and unique venue to demonstrate safety procedures in a hands-on way that children find easy to remember.
"Union Gas is committed to safety both on and off the job and to giving back to the communities, in which we operate, " said Doug French, Northeast District Manager, Union Gas. "We know that incidents are preventable. That’s why our support for this portable children's safety village, and six other safety villages across Ontario, was such a natural fit for us."
The elements of the new portable safety village are uniquely designed to fit in a 26 foot trailer that will travel from school to school and then expand on-site, turning the school gym into a safety village – complete with kid-sized signs, buildings, cars, trains and a multi media centre! This format, the first of its kind in Canada, provides children with access to a powerful interactive learning tool and eliminates the need for students to travel.
"Community sponsors like Union Gas are the backbone of the portable children’s safety village," said Constable Gerry Dwyer, Ontario Provincial Police, Orillia Detachment. "It is an honour to work with such dedicated community partners."
