At the core of Union Gas’ commitment to the community is the Spectra Energy Foundation. Funded by Spectra Energy shareholders, this non-profit organization makes charitable grants to selected charitable and non-profit organizations. Grant recipients must be recognized as a charitable organization registered with the Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA).

At Union Gas we direct our charitable giving to communities that fall within our service area which extends throughout northern Ontario from the Manitoba border to the North Bay/Muskoka area, through southwestern Ontario from Windsor to just west of Toronto (excluding the GTA), and across eastern Ontario from Port Hope to Cornwall.

Like many large companies, Union Gas receives numerous funding requests and in order to make a significant impact on our communities, we have a focused philanthropic giving program.

Areas of Focus

Our areas of focus are:

Educational Attainment

• Pre-k thru grade 12 education that meets the company/communities' professional needs. Focus on math, science and technology.

Competitive Workforce

• Job entry skills for the new economy (focus on skilled trades)
• Retraining of unemployed and underemployed workers
• Research needed to retool industries and create opportunities that fit the potential of each communities' work force skill pool
• Higher education that meets the company’s professional needs
   

Community Vitality

• United Way
• Community safety programs
• Environmental conservation, education and research
• Community leadership development
   

Funds are not provided for:

• Organizations that discriminate by race, creed, gender, age or national origin
• Political activities and organizations
• Grants to individual agencies of the United Way, because contributions to health and human service organizations are made through significant support of the United Way by Spectra Energy and its employees.
• Capital campaigns and endowments, except in extremely rare and specialized situations that relate directly to our areas of expertise in business
• Individuals
• Multi-year gifts, commitments or pledges
• Athletics, including individual sports teams and all-star teams
• Underwriting of films, video and television productions
• Reducing the cost of utility service (prohibited by law)
• Sectarian or religious activities
• Conferences, trips or tours
• Fraternal, veteran or labour groups serving only their members
• Advertising
• Membership fees or association fees, either personal or corporate
• Dinners or tables at fund-raisers are rarely considered
• Family Foundations

Making a Request

You may submit requests for charitable contributions and sponsorships in writing to your local Union Gas office or by email at communityconnections@uniongas.com. Your requests will be carefully reviewed and you will be notified within 60 days. Union Gas does not accept donation solicitations over the phone.
