October 2009 - For over two decades, the Union Gas Student Essay Scholarship Award has celebrated excellence in creative writing amongst high school students in Northern Ontario.
Winning authors receive a $3,000 scholarship to assist them in their pursuit of higher learning as they move into post-secondary education.
This year, students were challenged to write a 2,500 word essay tackling the theme “Environmental stewardship and the vitality of our community – how they are interconnected and what I can do to affect change.”
The winning author, Irina Cividino, is a grade 12 student at Sudbury's Lockerby high school. Her paper entitled "Be the Change", promotes her world view where we can all contribute to earth’s sustainability without having to be activists.
Ms. Cividino was honoured at the 2009 Northern Ontario Business Awards dinner, on October 7.
Congratulations Irina! We are pleased to be part of the community and help students explore the business world, as they express pride in Northern Ontario.
