How it works

The cold water coming into your house runs through a series of copper coils that are tightly wrapped around a copper drain stack.
As hot drain water passes through the drain, cold fresh water
passes up through the copper coils and heat is transferred, pre-heating the cold water before it gets to the water heater. Drain
water never mixes with the fresh water – it’s simply that heat from
the drain water is used to pre-heat the incoming water so the water heater has less work to do. Warmer water going into the water
tank requires less energy to heat, so energy costs go down.

Water heating is the second highest energy expense for most homes. Up to 90% of that heat energy washes straight down the drain. Now up to 60% of the heat from drain water is recovered and used to pre-heat cold water going to the water heater from about 8°C to about 23°C.
