Laundry Drying
Cost
comparison
Natural gas is more economical than electricity for commercial drying facilities.
A 25 lb electric commercial clothes dryer, running for five hours a day, costs approximately $3,180 per year. This is almost triple the $1,229 price of using a natural gas clothes dryer for the same amount of time.
| Dryer Capacity | Electricity | Natural Gas | Savings | |
| (9.68 cents/kWh) | (37.44 cents/m3) | ($) | % | |
| 25 lb | 18 kW unit | 64,000 BTUs/hr | ||
| Cost per hour | $1.74 | $ 0.67 | ||
| Cost per day (5 hrs per day) | $8.71 | $3.37 | ||
| Cost per year | $3,180 | $1,229 | $1,951 | 61% |
Assume 37.44 cents per m3 for natural gas; and 9.68 cents per kWh for electricity, which is the average price across Ontario as of April 2008.
Annual costs are based on an assumption of 5 hrs per day or 1,825 hrs per year. Savings would increase if the dryer operated more than five hours a day or if you have more than one dryer. Actual results will vary with actual usage.
